Here is the updated information for those interested in attending the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC)- Participatory Dragon Boat Festival in Florence Italy. DBC has just the initial payment committing us to attending the event.
First some background information:
The IBCPC is an international organisation whose mandate is to encourage the establishment of breast cancer dragon boat teams, within the framework of participation and inclusiveness. We support the development of recreational dragon boat paddling as a contribution to a healthy life style for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
DBC attended the 2014 Festival in Sarasota Florida and anyone who attended can attest to the powerful event. There were great speakers, parade, comradery, racing and overall great celebration. We recommend searching the event www.sarasotabcs2014festival.org/
to see some photos and things about the event. Take a look at the Florence website www.florencebcs2018.org
to get more info on the 2018 event. So, anyone who is interested in being part of this needs to make sure they let Monica know.
What does being part of this event mean? Our current understanding is that we can only put up to 26 names on the list as paddlers, but the event is open to supporters that get to experience the event and don’t have to paddle 😊 They can just enjoy the great wines of Italy and be the loudest cheerleaders for DBC on the Arno River. Or BCS supporters can add their names to a list and be added to international teams that need extra paddlers. Non-BCS supporters are also welcome to attend and be part of this special event.
The initial email went out and we currently have 32 DBC BCS members interested. So here are the things you need to know to make your decision and help us make the decisions that need to be made.
Event Dates: Racing Days: July 7th and 8th, 2018 (Practice days start as early as July 4th, 2018)
Location: Florence Italy at the Cascine Park on the Arno River
Hotel: NH Firenze is the hotel and the prices are 225 Euros per room double occupancy (thanks to the DBC internal travel group in identifying the hotel).
Airfare: Unknown right now but you can start looking into it if interested in attending
Race Costs: 300.00 euros per person (this gets you transportation, meals at the venue, access to the athletes village, pre-party, after party and 2 days of racing.
At this time, we need to assume that you as an individual paddler will have to cover some of the travel costs. DBC has already paid for part of the race fees and will pay for the remaining race costs. This event is in 2018 and DBC has yet to develop budgets and cannot commit to anything more now.
DBC needs to make final deposits (non-refundable) by Nov 30, 2017.
DBC needs to name the final paddlers by Nov 30, 2017.
Things to keep in mind and decisions you have to make:
Here is the catch- with 32 people interested right now, and up to 26 paddlers allowed, you may be attending as a supporter. Is this a deal breaker for you? Or are you okay with being added to a mixed team? Please let Monica know where you stand on this by Friday, March 3rd, 2017. **Please also indicate if anyone (i.e spouse/significant other/friend/family members) will be coming with you!
If the lists remains at over 26, we will hold a series of tryout dates and paddling, fitness tests. These dates and the criteria will be well published but will most likely take place over the summer and early fall months. With a full roster of up to 26, you may also not be paddling every race.
Our list of paddlers must include steers people and drummer. Anyone who wants to steer will have a step up in being named to the team. If you want to steer, please attend Rob’s class and let’s get you steering in a race or two before next year.
DBC needs to know if you are really interested in attending and if so will ask for a $100.00 deposit. DBC will refund the money if you decide you cannot attend by November 30, 2017.
